Here are some of the more commonly asked questions and their corresponding answers about our community band programme.

The Band Lab Community Band Programme is Sarawak’s first multi-award-winning, non-affiliated educational platform that provides an opportunity for members of the public ages 13 to 35 (at the time of application) to gain access to quality music education in a form of a wind band and indulge in the joy of music-making with a group of like-minded individuals.

Each official member of The Band Lab Community Programme will have to pay a monthly subscription fee of RM50 each month (fees for 2024). This fee does not include other additional expenses such as camp fees, registration fees for competitions, additional instrument accessories etc.

In order to keep the programme accessible and affordable for everyone, please contact us if you require financial aid or other forms of assistance to participate in our programme.

While our usual recruitment process does not require applicants to have a prior background in music, it will be preferred if you have at least some music experience.

That said, if you are a complete beginner and would still like to sign up for our programme, you are highly encouraged to do so as we may still be able to fit you into the programme if there are additional spaces available.

Our Community Band Programme has a set of its own instruments that members are allowed to borrow during their time in the programme. However, as these instruments are limited in numbers, they will be provided on a first-come-first-serve and/or merit basis. Therefore, we highly encourage members to purchase their own instrument so that the programme’s instruments may be reserved for those who need it more.

Not for the time being. However, due to limited space and instruments available, all recruits will be asked to undergo a two-week screening and orientation process for their suitabilities to be evaluated.

The 2-week screening and orientation process is a more friendly and suitable method (as opposed to auditions) employed by TBL to assess the suitability of each recruit before they are invited to officially join the programme.

This process involves each batch of recruits attending TWO sectionals and TWO full band rehearsals during a span of two weeks.

During this time, the recruits will be acquainted with our current members and learn about the ins and outs of how our programme operates. Our senior members and executive committee will also take this opportunity to evaluate each recruit’s suitability in joining the programme.

All successful recruits will be notified in writing accompanied by an official invitation to join the programme.

Upon receipt of your application, our team will review your particulars and get in touch with you within 2 weeks.

All forms of contact will be done via WhatsApp or Email according to the contact information that you have provided during the application process (unless otherwise notified). So, make sure you check your inbox and spam folders regularly so that you do not miss out on any follow-ups from us.

If you are successful in your application, you will receive an official invitation email with more details pertaining to the 2-week screening and orientation process (see above).

If you are unsuccessful in your application, you will also receive an official email stating so. However, being unsuccessful does not mean that you will not be successful in our next recruitment drive. Therefore, we encourage you to not give up and apply again during our next round of recruitment.

For normal weekly practices:
– Sectionals x 1 (To be decided by section)
– Tuttis on Sundays x 1 (200pm to 530pm)

For upcoming competitions/performances etc:
– Varied, Extended hours of practices
