ABOUT THE PIECE

‘Toy’s Parade’ is composed by Japanese Composer Yuichi Hirayama and has been selected as one of the set pieces for the All Japan Band Competition (AJBC) for the year 2020. It has also been awarded the “30th Asahi Composition Award”.

This piece is written in a march-like style, incorporating lyrical melodies and comical rhythms that is intended to, in the words of the composer, paint a scene of a group of toys singing pleasantly in a bright and fun march. The composer, in writing this piece, drew inspiration from scenes where characters in early Disney musical films usually sing together.

What’s unusual about this piece is that while it is march-like, it contains the following elements which are usually not found in strict marches:

  • Having a molto rit. in the middle of the piece
  • Includes a General Pause (G.P.)
  • A huge change in tempo where it suddenly becomes very slow with Lento (=40) and from there it accelerates to =120 with accel.

Now, imagine having to march with a piece like that!
