Yon Nian Shee

Yon Nian Shee is an active percussionist based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. As a performer, she plays with National Symphony Orchestra Malaysia, Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, Kuala Lumpur City Opera and Philharmonic Winds of Malaysia. She is the percussionist of the percussion-piano duo group - Klaviercussion and recently gave the world premiere of ‘Pump #5’ for vibraphone and piano by Dana Kaufman in the Music by Women Festival 2021 and Hot Air Music Festival 2021. The duo group also won the first prize of the instrumental category in the Stay At Home Music Video Contest hosted by Tourism Malaysia in 2020. Nian Shee was the Music Director of the storytelling music concert ‘Jungle Dream’ production in 2019 and one of the Music Directors of the Malaysia Percussion Festival 2017.

In 2017, Nian Shee was invited to perform in the ALC – Korean International Conference and Festival, and appeared as guest musician for SoundBridge Festival in Malaysia. During her studies in Boston, she performed with Akron Symphony Orchestra, New England Philharmonic, and OperaHub. She was an active member of the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and had toured all around Malaysia, Singapore and Australia. Nian Shee was selected to join the ASEAN-Russian Symphony Orchestra for Young Musicians in Bali, Indonesia in 2011 and Brevard Music Summer Festival in 2014 and 2015.

As an educator, Nian Shee has given percussion workshops in Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris, Malaysian Institute of Art, British International School of Kuala Lumpur, Fairview International School and Sri Kuala Lumpur. Nian Shee is currently teaching at University of Malaya, University Putra Malaysia and Garden International School.

Nian Shee holds Master in Music in Percussion Performance, Professional Studies Certificate at The Boston Conservatory, and Bachelor of Performing Arts (Music) from University of Malaya. Her instructions include Keith Aleo, Nancy Zeltsman, Kyle Brightwell, Douglas Perkins, Paul Philbert, Darcey Timmermann, and Matthew Prendergast.
