Kenny Ooi

A native of Penang, Kenny Ooi is a final year trumpet student in the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, National University of Singapore under the tutelage of Jon Dante and Lau Wen Rong from the Singapore Symphony Orchestra.

He has performed with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, Metropolitan Festival Orchestra, Orchestra of the Music Makers, Yong Siew Toh Conservatory Orchestra, Penang Philharmonic Orchestra and Penang Symphony Orchestra, and more. He attended the Italian Brass Week 2017 in Florence, where he studied with trumpet virtuosos, such as Sergey Nakariakov, Pacho Flores, Otto Sauter, Rex Richardson and Andrea Tofanelli. He also performed with the West Australian Youth Orchestra in 2018 in Perth. In 2019, he has selected as one of the members of the Asia Pacific Youth Symphony Orchestra.

Recently, Kenny has appeared as a substitute musician with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra for their concerts and tours. His latest highlight includes the concert tour with the Asian Youth Orchestra across 11 cities in Asia.

His previous teachers have included William Theis, Alexander White, William Day and Dato’ Woon Wen Kin. He has taken part and performed in masterclasses by Chris Moyse, Pasi Pirinen, Bill Williams, Anthony Plog, Jason Evans, Adam Rapa, Bill Williams, Lukas Beno, Daniel Mendelow and the Boston Brass.

Other than performing, Kenny has been actively involving in concert and festival productions, where he founded the inaugural Penang International Brass Festival 2019. He was also the Symposium Liaison for the Performers(') Present International Artistic Research Symposium 2019. Before this, he was a student intern with the Conservatory Ensembles Office, where he assists and manages the ensembles’ activities. He has worked with renowned artists, such as Bruno Weil, Gabor Takac-Nagy, Igudesman & Joo, Jason Lai, Jorma Panula, Masaaki Suzuki, London Haydn Quartet, Shlomo Mintz and more.
