Japheth Law
Malaysian flautist Japheth Law has appeared as guest sub-principal with the City of Birmingham Orchestra (CBSO) and an extra player with the Orpheus Sinfonia and Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra in London.Â
An avid orchestral player, Japheth participated in the prestigious CBSO Orchestral Training Scheme from 2018-2020. As part of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire (RBC) Chamber Orchestra, he performed John Rutter’s Requiem—under the baton of the composer himself—which was later broadcast on BBC Radio 3. Japheth was a member of the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra from 2013-2018, and has appeared as a guest musician in orchestras such as the National Symphony Orchestra of Malaysia, Penang Philharmonic Orchestra, Penang Symphony Orchestra, and the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre Orchestra.
Having recently won the 2021 British Flute Society Competition’s Best Piccolo Performance and Audience Prize in the Young Artist category, Japheth was also a laureate of the 2018 Malaysian Wind Prize and a recipient of the Yamaha Music Malaysia scholarship. A passionate chamber musician, he won RBC’s Sylvia Cleaver Chamber Music Prize together with his trio, and they were also finalists in both the Town Hall Symphony Hall and Leamington Music prizes.
Japheth began his flute lessons with Iun Chen Kim in his hometown, Kuching, and later studied with Yukako Yamamoto, Hristo Dobrinov, and Sonia Croucher. In 2015, he was accepted into the highly-acclaimed flute studio of Trevor Wye, which typically accepts postgraduates and young professionals, and later that year became the youngest graduate of the studio. After receiving a full scholarship to study at the UCSI University in 2016, he continued his undergraduate studies at RBC on a scholarship, where he currently studies with Marie-Christine Zupancic (flute) and Andrew Lane (piccolo). He has performed in masterclasses given by Andrea Oliva, Emily Beynon, Kevin Gowland, Kathleen Stevenson, and Joshua Batty.
