Desmond Tie
Desmond was first introduced to the trombone when he joined SMK St Joseph Kuching School’s Marching Show Band in the year 2001 under the tutelage of the Music Director, Mr. Anthony Wong. When he furthered his studies in Scotland (2011-2012), Desmond joined Glasgow University Wind Band, Johnstone Brass Band and Byres Road Big Band and performed for various events and festivals within Scotland.
Since returning to Kuching in 2013, Desmond has been the resident trombonist for Simfoni Orkestra Negeri Sarawak (Classical) under the batons of Dato Marcus Leong and Victor Leong, as well as Simfoni Orkestra Negeri Sarawak (Jazz & Pop) under Saidful Hamdan.
Desmond is also currently a session trombonist, both as a live performer as well as a recording artist for various local bands and has performed for events such as Rainforest World Music Festival, Rainforest Fringe Festival, Sarawak International Festival of Music and Arts and What About Kuching Festival.
Under the tutelage of Ryan Quigley and Paul Towndrow, Desmond was an active participant for the Glasgow International Jazz Festival in 2012. He also had a one-on-one masterclass with Dr. Brett Baker during the Singapore Trombone Festival in 2014.
Since 2017, Desmond has been tutoring the lower brass students at St Joseph’s Private School Concert Band. He hopes that he can further inspire more Sarawakians to learn and perform with brass instruments.
Desmond is currently working as a full time Civil Engineer.
